Here are a few resources I have looked at over the past few months which you may find useful:
- For computer trainers who are looking for lots of quick ideas,
How to Deliver Dynamic Training: 77 Sensational Tips for Computer Instructors
by Daina A. Bruners is worth a read. The publisher is Dynamite Press International,
the copyright date is 1997 and the ISBN is 0-96815-530-8.
- Communication for Teachers by Joseph L. Chesebro and James C.
McCroskey is a wonderful book which focuses on making practical suggestions based
on research done in the area of instructional communication. The publisher is
Allyn and Bacon, the copyright date is 2002 and the ISBN is 0-205-31887-8.
- For those of you interested in ethics, a new column has recently started
in T&D magazine. The column is called: "Speaking of Ethics". In
this column, an ethical training dilemma is described and two responses are given as to how
it might be handled.
Previous resources:
- There have been some interesting articles on the brain showing up in Training
& Development magazine lately. Titles include: "Memory and Learning" (October 2000)
and "Emotion and Learning" (November 2000).
- In the January 2001 Training & Development magazine, you may wish to take a
look at the article on page 62 entitled: "Training Across Cultures: What to Expect".
- Dr. Susan Imel, Director of ERIC's Clearinghouse on Adult, Career and Vocational Education
lists a number of resources which deal with intercultural understanding. You can read the article
by clicking the following link: Promoting Intercultural Understanding
- For those of you interested in consulting, a new column has recently started in
T&D magazine (a name change seems to have occurred). The column is called "Diary of a Consultant".
- "Plumbing the Trainer's Heart" is a short, insightful article exploring
learner-instructor interactions. You can find it in the September/October 1999 issue of
Technical Training magazine.
- If you are in the market to purchase a multimedia projector, The Training Report's
April 1999 article "The Revolution in Multimedia Projectors" may be helpful.
- Those of you who are interested in technology-based training may wish to read
The Training Report's May/June 1999 article "I took on the challenge of satellite-based distance training...and survived".
- The November 1999 issue of Training & Development magazine has a
short, useful article entitled: "Design Learner-Friendly Training Manuals".
- The Training Report's January/February 2000 issue has an article entitled:
"The New Chapter in Corporate Learning". It provides a look at the corporate
university concept.
- For those of you interested in the brain, you may wish to look at:"Brain-Friendly
Communication" in the February 2000 issue of Training & Development
magazine. Another interesting article in that issue is: "The Young and the
Rest of Us" which looks at the implications of working with younger learners.
- The May 1, 2000 Maclean's magazine has an interesting article on the brain
entitled: "How We Think".
- For anyone looking for some help in demystifying technology-based training,
a read through the following book will prove worthwhile:
- Kruse, K. & Keil, J. (2000). Technology-Based Training.
San Francisco: Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer.
- Computer trainers may wish to take a look at:
- Clothier, Paul. (1996). The Complete Computer Trainer. New York: McGraw-Hill.
- The December 1997 Training & Development magazine has a helpful article entitled:
"A Start-Up Guide to Distance Learning" on page 39. See the chart on pages 40-41 for
an outline of the different technologies and the pro's and con's of each.
- Colleagues who co-train may wish to read the excellent article in the May 1998 issue of
Training & Development. See page 14 for: "How to Train With a Partner (and Not Come to Blows)".
- The Winter 1998-1999 issue of Adult Learning (Volume 10, Number 2) has two articles
focusing on the brain:
- See page 10 for "Navigating the New Reality: An Exploration of Brain-Compatible Learning";
- See page 18 for "Learning and the Brain".
Volume 2, Number 1 of The Training Report has an interesting article on how to
evaluate multimedia. See page 10 for: "Multimedia Mind Games".
The February 1999 issue of Training & Development has a worthwhile read for those
interested in evaluation. See page 19 for: "Thinking Outside the Evaluation Box".
For instructors who would like to explore voice issues, the following book by Linda Rammage
is a useful read: Vocalizing with Ease: A Self-Improvement Guide. For information,

- The October 1995 issue of Training has a thorough article on accelerated
learning. See page 93 for "Accelerated Learning: Madness With a Method".
- The September 1997 issue of Training & Development has two articles
that might catch your eye:
- See page 12 for "Training Technophobes" which looks at how to
help participants who are afraid of computers;
- See page 20 for "10 Ways to Get Management Buy-In".
- The July 1997 issue of Training & Development has an interesting
article on the difficulties of training transfer. See page 19 for: "That Was a Great Class, But..."
- For those of you who are interested in a thoughtful and thought-provoking book
about teaching, you might enjoy the following:
